The Indian Government Central Sector Scheme–National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is an important initiative by the Government of India designed to provide financial assistance to bright students from economically weaker sections. The main goal of NMMSS is to prevent dropouts at the secondary level and encourage students to continue their education up to higher secondary levels.
The Central Sector Scheme called the ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme’ was introduced in 2008 after getting approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The main aim of this scheme is to provide scholarships to bright students from economically weaker sections, helping them stay in school after Class 8 and continue their education at the secondary level. Every year, 100,000 new scholarships are given to students in Class 9, with the possibility of renewal for Classes 10 to 12, as long as they continue studying in State Government, Government-aided, or local body schools.
From April 1, 2017, the scholarship amount was increased to ₹12,000 per year (it was ₹6,000 per year earlier). The Cabinet has also approved the continuation of this scheme from the financial year 2021-22 to 2025-26, with a total budget allocation of ₹1,827 crores. Click here for NMMSS Guidelines!
